New hiring of a social worker with paraplegia for the social service of a city

Disability and functional restriction of the employee:

The woman is paraplegic and has to use a wheelchair. Their reach and mobility are restricted. She is not able to operate controls with her feet. The GdB (degree of disability) is 100.

Training and job:

The woman studied social work and was hired as a social worker for the social service of the city administration.

Workplace and duties:

The social worker works in the information and advice center for disabled and elderly people mainly at a computer workstation with a wheelchair-accessible desk. She helps the group of people with problems in the personal and social area. She also works with relatives or caregivers.

Work environment and mobility:

The work place of the social worker is in an office room on the ground floor of the house. A platform lift was installed to overcome the stairs to the 1st and 2nd floor. The entrance door was equipped with electric door drives. The sanitary area was converted and equipped (wash basin, toilet, support handles, etc.) so that women can use them without problems and barriers (e.g. when transferring from a wheelchair to the toilet) and in an emergency can call for help via a personal emergency call system. The woman is mobile thanks to a specially adapted car with automatic transmission. The car was completely converted to manual operation (accelerator and brake). Appropriate requirements for driving the car were made by the driver's license office and the TÜV.

Funding and participation:

The disability-friendly design was promoted by the employment agency as part of the new appointment. The employment agency also subsidized the purchase of the vehicle and its disability-friendly adaptation to 100 percent. Advice was provided by the employment agency's technical advice service.
