Areas of Application:
- Reduction of pain
- Reduction of medication consumption and associated side effects
- Improved quality of life
Description:
Pain signals travel along the nerves to the brain, where they are perceived as a sensation of pain. Neurostimulation offers a possible alternative in cases of severe chronic pain or intolerance to medication for pain therapy.
In neurostimulation, a neurostimulation device is placed under the skin in a minimally invasive procedure and sends weak electrical impulses to the spinal nerves via a thin electrode implanted near the spinal cord. These electrical impulses mask the pain signals in the brain so that a slight, pleasant tingling sensation is felt instead of pain. The intensity of the tingling can be adjusted using an external device so that the sensation of pain can be controlled and minimised in everyday life.
With the RestoreSensor neurostimulator, an acceleration sensor also detects the body posture, stores it and adapts its stimulation intensity to the respective body posture.
A permanent implantation of the neurostimulation device is preceded by a test phase lasting several weeks, during which the tolerability and efficiency of the device is tested on the patient.
