Disability and functional limitation of the employee:

The man has respiratory disease. He therefore reacts strongly to fluctuations in climate (e.g. temperature, draughts and changes in the weather), which leads to high absenteeism due to illness. His degree of disability is 60.

Training and job:

He has no vocational training and since finishing school is employed by the company. Initially he worked as a sorter and finally changed to forklift driver at the depot.

Workplace and duties:

He is employed in the high-tech mail sorting center of the MAIL Branch in North Berlin as a forklift driver. Previously the loading of the transport containers or vehicles with letters onto a truck waiting in front of the hall took place with an open forklift. Because of the constant change between the inside and outside the hall his airways were severely strained which led to high absenteeism. Because of the frequent illness time the company doctor was engaged. After examining him he certified that there was no health objection to him carrying out his loading activities provided the severe climate stress could be overcome. For this purpose a forklift with a closed and heated driver cabin was acquired (see figure 1 and 2). Through the improved temperature in the cabin and the protection against the weather, the strain could be considerably reduced and further absenteeism from work due to illness avoided.

Funding and participation:

He was 100% supported by the Office for vocational integration. The contact to the technical advisory service of the Office for vocational integration and the coordination of measures took place through a representative of the employer and the representative for employees with severe disabilities of the branch.
