Training place layout for an apprentice dental technician with a hand prothesis in a dental laboratory

The employer is a dental laboratory which manufactures dental prostheses.

Disability and functional restriction of the employee:

He has had a missing right hand and part of his lower arm since birth. Because of this he is restricted in holding, carrying abd gripping. His degree of disability is 50.

Training and job:

Her completed a 6 week practical in a dental laboratory. During this time he convinced the owner of the dental laboratory of his ability so that after the practical he kept his training place as a dental technician.

Workplace and duties:

He has a lower arm prothesis which can be equipped with an electric hand for work. A modern electronic control built into the lower arm prothesis enables the regulation in the electric hand of speed and gripping strength via the strength of muscle signals from the arm. Thus forceful gripping but also gentle touching of small and breakable objects is possible (figure 1). The gripping hand can also be operated manually (with the left hand) via a hand wheel. With the electronic hand he can hold objects and position them while he carries out the necessary fine motor activities with the left hand (figure 2). Because of his above mentioned disability the availability of an ergonomically laid out workplace is particularly important.

He works at a technical table with:
- electric adjustable worktop
- integrated dust removal with pivoting suction head
- inbuilt gas, air and electric connections
- retractable arm plates
- pivoting workplace lighting and
- ergonomic revolving workchair

The technical table is set out for seated activities, while standing activities are planned for the plaster table. Thus his body posture can be frequently changed during the working day. The laser welding system is also set out for seated activities. Various settings on the system take place via a multi-function foot control so that his hands remain free for concentrated and interuption free work (figure 3).
