Work design for a traffic planner with a hearing impairment

Employer:

The employee works for a public transport company that operates a network of public transport buses (city and regional transport) and organizes bus travel. The employer wanted to dismiss the employee because he could no longer carry out the work tasks required by him, such as telephoning, due to disability.

Disability and functional limitation of the employee:

The man has a hearing impairment. His hearing has deteriorated further, so that he has limited ability to perceive acoustic information such as speech and signals. The GdB (degree of disability) is 60.

Job:

The man is an engineer and has been working for his employer for several years.

Workplace and work duties:

The man works as a traffic planning manager in an office at a computer workstation. He is responsible for monitoring the traffic flow of the entire network, the traffic planning and the scheduling. The co-ordination of the traffic processes takes place predominantly by telephone. The employee's workstation was equipped with a radio telephone with an amplified magnetic field in the receiver for telephoning. His hearing aids allow inductive listening via the T-coils when making a call, so that the spoken through the magnetic field of the listener can be transmitted directly through the coils in the respective hearing and amplified. The phone has been supplemented by a so-called flash lamp, so that the employee can take the incoming calls. The use of the aids allows the employee to perform his duties in full, so that there is no reason for termination.

Further Information

The payment-free hearing aids were funded by the statutory health insurance and the telephone and the flashlamp for disability-friendly design were funded by the Integration and Inclusion Office. The advice was provided by the engineering specialist service of the Integration or Inclusion Office - the so-called Technical Advisory Service - and by a hearing care professional, who was responsible for the settings of the hearing aids as well as providing advice and sales.
