Case Study
Workplace design for a social insurance employee

Employer:

The man is employed by a trade association.

Disability and functional limitation:

The man is visually impaired. His left eye is blind, the vision in his right eye is diminished, and his visual field is limited. The man's ability to perceive visual information (numbers, signs or symbols) is limited, and he finds it difficult to read without magnification facilities. When reading with a magnifying glass, he maintains a very short visual distance. The GdB (degree of disability) is 100.

Job:

The employee works as a social insurance clerk for his employer.

Workplace and work task (actual state):

The employee works in the department for the central collection of contributions, in the area of public law contracts and foreign accident insurance, at a computer workstation in the office. The job involves preparing documents, reading information, completing files and talking to customers on the telephone. The employee has only a pair of magnifying glasses at his disposal, which he can use to read shorter documents. This assistive products is not satisfactory to compensate for the disability-related visual limitations in the workplace.

Workplace and work task (target condition):

The employee needs a reading device (character reader) at his workplace to read letters, files, etc. in black print. Especially when reading longer texts, a reading device is very helpful for visually impaired people, as the visual information is read out to them acoustically.
For reading short texts with the magnifier, the assistive products Stehplus (standing desk with concept holder) is installed at the workplace or work desk. With its various adjustment options, it enables the employee to read short texts with the magnifying glass in an ergonomically favourable posture at a satisfactory viewing distance.
A large screen and magnification software are used for the perception of screen contents when working at the PC. The screen contents can thus be satisfactorily enlarged for the employee.
