Case Study Workplace design for three severely disabled kitchen assistants and landscape workers

Employer:

The employer operates a rest stop and restaurant on the highway.

1. Severely disabled employee

Disability and functional limitation:

The man is missing his left forearm after an amputation. His reach and his ability to grasp and handle objects are limited. The GdB (degree of disability) is 50.

Training and job:

The man was newly hired by the employer as a kitchen helper and landscaper.

2. Severely Disabled Employee

Disability and Functional Limitation:

The man has bone stiffness in his right hand, with additional isolated finger limbs missing from the hand (partial limb loss). The disability of the right hand means that he has limited use for grasping and handling objects and loads. In addition, the man is mentally disabled. The degree of disability is 60 (GdB 60).

Job:

The man works as a kitchen helper and landscaper for his employer.

3. Severely Disabled Employee

Disability and Functional Limitation:

The man has a shortened leg and large scars on his shortened leg. He cannot be permanently employed for physical work and walking long distances due to his disability. The degree of his disability is 50 (GdB 50).

Job:

The man works as a kitchen helper and landscaper for his employer.

Workplace and work task (actual condition):

The three employees work mainly in three shifts as kitchen helpers. In the kitchen area, their duties mainly include washing cooking utensils (pans, larger pots, etc.) and glasses. They are additionally employed to maintain the entire grounds and to carry out minor repairs to the building. Employees are put under considerable physical strain by cutting grass with a hand mower and manually washing cooking utensils and glasses.

Workplace and Work Task (Target Condition):

In order to eliminate the physical strain placed on employees performing kitchen work and landscape maintenance, a dishwasher for the glasses, a universal dishwasher for the cooking utensils, and a compact tractor or lawn tractor for mowing the lawn as well as sweeping with the appropriate accessories (mower, front sweeping broom, and catch basin) need to be purchased.

Assistive products used:

Further Information

75% of the work design was funded by the Integration Office. The employment agency paid the employer a wage cost subsidy (1st year 60 %, 2nd year 50 % and 3rd year 40 %) as integration aid for the newly hired severely disabled employee, as he was previously unemployed.
