Case Study Reconstruction of the access routes for a trainee bank clerk

Employer:

Employer is a bank.

Disability and functional limitation:

The man has been paraplegic since a private accident. He is dependent on the constant use of a wheelchair. His grasping range is limited due to disability.

Vocational training:

The young man is undergoing vocational training at the bank to become a bank clerk. Because of his accident he had to interrupt the vocational training. The bank is willing to allow him to continue the vocational training.

Working environment:

The trainee has to climb two steps with a total height of 22 cm at the staff entrance. To enable him to reach the workplace without barriers, a ramp with a still permissible gradient of 6% is installed with appropriate guardrail protection. The entrance door must be able to be opened via an electric door drive. The elevator system must be modified. The following minimum dimensions apply to the car:
- clear width 110 cm,
- clear depth 140 cm and
- clear door passage width 90 cm.
A mirror must be installed opposite the car door for better orientation, as the wheelchair user cannot turn around in the car and use the mirror to check entry or exit. The controls or buttons of the lift must be installed horizontally, at a height of 85 cm and at least 50 cm away from the side walls. The font or type size of the controls must not be less than 2 to 3 cm. The keypad of the controls must not be smaller than 5 cm. If necessary, it must be possible to retrofit the lift with acoustic signalling devices. The closing of the lift doors must be monitored by obstacle sensors, at least two light barriers at a height of 25 cm and 75 cm. A movement area of at least 150 x 150 cm is required in front of the lift for manoeuvring with a wheelchair.
