Workplace design for an employee with blindness in the material management

The employer is a ministry.

Disability and functional impairment of the employee:

The man's vision took over the years from the extent that he has only a residual vision of 1-2% and therefore he is blind. For him, therefore optical information must be converted so that they can be tactile with your fingers (eg Braille) or perceived acoustically. The GdB (degree of disability) is 100.

Training and job:

The man has passed in a Berufsförderungswerk (BFW) trained as a telecommunications operator and later a training to become a specialist for office organization and word processing.

Workplace and work tasks:
The employees worked in the ministry as a typist in the typing pool for textualization of vordiktierten texts and protocols. The write service, however, was used less and less, so that his work there eventually fell away. The employee was therefore moved to a new workplace. At his new job in the office management material he is working on a VDU workstation in conjunction with a vertical carousel that works on the paternoster system. VDU workstation and carousel thereby form the actual storage system for materials management (Figure 1 and 2).
Its activity consists of a combination of inventory and maintenance, as well as the issuance of the requested forms and office supplies. On his computer workstation or PC he uses a Braille display in conjunction with a screen reader (special software), with which he can use the usual office software (eg e-mail and word processing software) and control the PC. The Braille display converts to using the screen reader, the optical contents of the screen in Braille or information to computer, which can be read by touch with fingers. Alternatively, it can be read via the voice output the contents well. Entries are made using a standard keyboard by using the 10-finger system, which is otherwise used by sighted people.
In order for the material management and operation of the circulating rack with the help of screen readers and Braille display could be done on a PC, a special and barrier-free software a company for innovative solutions for the professional integration of people was employed with blindness, for which the company is a software interface to the carousel had set up. The incorporation of the employee took place with the companies in close cooperation.
The employee can now access the requested material in a database on the PC. The data is then transferred to the carousel, which automatically moves the corresponding storage drawers in an ergonomic removal position. Each storage compartment is marked with Braille labels on which the employee-oriented. The stock he is like then again via Braille display with the database on the PC. Aufzufüllendes material is provided to the employee and sorted by him.
The workplace is set up so that it can be used to represent a holiday or illness of colleagues.
A short film for example, you can practice using the link below: Calling from the workplace video on YouTube.

Occupational health and safety:

A standard photoelectric curtain (several light barriers at small distances) prevents the contact by an immediate release of the stop operation, the removal and storage during the shelf circulation and allows only the filing and withdrawal during standstill.

Work environment - Mobility:

The man reached his workplace by public transport. He nutz while his long cane (cane) as a guide.

Assistive devices used:

assistive products for orientation
materials and tools for the identification
tactile computer displays (braille displays)
special edition software (screen readers)
storage and supply systems
office and industrial software

Promotion and participation:

The disability-related work planning was supported by the Integration Office. The consultation was carried out by the engineer-specialist service for disability-related work planning the integration office - the so-called Technical Advisory Service and the company Dräger & Lienert, offering innovative solutions for the integration of people with blindness (Contact see Applied tools: ISO 28 21 12).
