Layout of a workplace for a saleswoman with paraplegia

Disability and functional limitation of the woman:

She suffers from paraplegia. Her arms and hands are considerably limited with respect to her reach and muscle strength. As well as this her right hand is bent inwards. She is dependent on an electric wheelchair. Her degree of disability is 100 (GdB 100).

Career:

She has worked for two years for her employer as a sales woman.

Workplace and duties:

She works at a computer workplace. She undertakes the following duties:
- telephone
- storing of data in a database or an archive
- looking after data continuance
- administration of customer files
- punching holes into and filing papers
Because of her disability she is limited in carrying out her work duties eg. punching holes into and filing of papers. In addition, her office door prevents barrier-free reaching of the other offices or colleagues, as she cannot open and close the doors without help.

Workplace and duties (desired status):

She needs an electric puncher and stapler. These aids automatically punch holes into and staple papers after pressing a start button (with one hand). So that she can reach the other offices barrier- free or independently, a connecting door must be equipped with an automatic door opener and closer. On the inside of the door a movement activator must be put in and on the outside a switch, these are mounted at a height of 85 cm (area of reach).

Assistive devices used:

electrically powered wheelchairs with powered steering
gate, door, window and curtain openers/closers
assistive products for office administration, information storage and management at work

Support:

The Main Welfare Office sponsored the disabled-friendly layout with 100%.
