Use of a forklift for lifting and transporting for a production assistant with spinal disease

Employer:

The company (number of employees 873) manufactures electromagnetic materials for transformers and motors. 15 of the 44 severely disabled employees work in the social workshop of the company as they cannot be integrated into the usual three shift work.

Disability and functional limitation of the employee:

He suffers from spinal disease, a degenerative shoulder joint (left), airways disease and the results of ureteral surgery. Because of his disability he is limited in carrying out activities like lifting and carrying loads. His degree of disability is 50 (GdB 50).

Job:

For the past few years he has worked in the social workshop of the company.

Workplace and duties (actual status):

His workplace is in the social workshop. Here personal safety equipment (special leather aprons, gloves, safety shoes, etc) and production aids (textile planks, sliding supports, packaging aids, etc. ) are manufactured.
The manufacturing of sliding supports requires carpeting roll remnants, which after delivery must be placed manually into the transport vehicle and transported or pushed into the approx. 1 m higher ground floor of the social workshop. The finished pieces or sliding supports are stacked in lattice boxes. These are transported by hand to the dispatch. For the hand transport of the lattice boxes he needs the help of his colleagues as they are too heavy for one man. The resulting strain of transport is too much for the disabilities. The strain even leads to an eventual further deterioration in health.

Workplace (desired status):

A forklift operated by the disabled man and his colleagues must be used for lifting and transporting loads. With the use of the forklift the manual lifting and transport work disappear.

Assistive devices used:

powered industrial vehicles used to lift and transport materials

Support:

The disabled-friendly layout was 60% financed by the Main Welfare Office. In addition the Main Welfare Office imposed an obligation period of 5 years.
